Job Application Answer Examples: Make Your Experience Specific

Start with the requirement, not the draft

Before writing, underline the capability the employer is asking for: stakeholder communication, analysis, ownership, customer focus, or something else. Your answer should make it easy to see that capability without asking the reader to infer it.

Choose one example with a defined situation, a contribution you can own, and a result or learning. Specificity creates credibility; generic adjectives do not.

• ✓Weak: “I am a strong team player with excellent communication skills.”
• ✓Stronger: “I coordinated feedback from support and product teams, summarised the recurring issues, and used it to prioritise the next release.”

Use a simple answer pattern

A practical written answer has three parts: the relevant context, the action you took, and the result or impact. Keep the context short so the employer can quickly reach the evidence.

Adapt the same experience for different questions by changing the capability you foreground. A project may show initiative in one answer and collaboration in another, but the underlying facts should remain true.

• ✓Context: name the role, project, or challenge.
• ✓Action: describe your contribution with active verbs.
• ✓Impact: state the result, improvement, or lesson.

Edit for a human reader

Remove empty intensifiers such as “very”, “highly”, and “extremely” unless you can support the claim. Replace jargon with language a hiring manager outside your current team can understand.

Finally, compare the answer with the question. If the first sentence does not address what was asked, reorder the draft before making it longer.
