How to Improve Job Application Answers: A Practical Checklist

Diagnose the first draft

Read the answer as if you knew nothing about the applicant. Can you identify the capability being demonstrated, the action the person took, and why it mattered? If not, the draft needs structure before it needs polish.

A strong edit preserves the applicant’s real experience. It does not invent a metric, responsibility, or achievement to make the language more impressive.

• ✓Does the first sentence answer the question directly?
• ✓Is there one concrete example rather than a list of traits?
• ✓Is the applicant’s own contribution clear?
• ✓Does the answer explain an outcome, learning, or impact?
• ✓Would a reader outside the current team understand the terms used?

Rewrite one layer at a time

First, remove irrelevant background. Next, replace broad claims with an action and supporting detail. Finally, make the connection to the role explicit. Editing in this order avoids a polished answer that still fails to answer the question.

For example, “I am organised” becomes stronger when it explains a method: how priorities were chosen, how stakeholders were informed, and what improved as a result.

• ✓Relevance: a direct connection to the employer’s requirement.
• ✓Tone: confident without exaggeration.

Check the answer before submitting

Read the final version aloud and compare it with the job description. If it could be pasted unchanged into any application, add role-specific context. If it only works because of inflated language, return to the evidence.

Keep a master record of your examples and tailor each answer from that source. This is faster and more reliable than rewriting your career history from scratch every time.
